Understanding the basics of Search Engine Optimization : Part 1

Search Engine Optimization might be a term that most of us have heard of, but not many of us may be aware of the technical side of the things.

Through this series of multiple blog posts, I aim to cover the topic of Search Engine Optimization in the most basic sense.

Each of the blog posts will cover various elements that Search Engine Optimization comprises of and the pace of covering these topics will be very slow.

So if you are completely new to the field of Digital Marketing, then these blog posts are perfect for you.

This is part 1 of the series, let's get started!

History of Search Engines

So, the very first search engine debuted in 1990, and it was called Archie.

However, this one did not operate the way Google does right now.

Archie only managed to display the names of the webpages but not the content.

And now we have multiple search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc. that not only help you with the name of the webpages but also let’s you browse through the content!

The algorithm behind these search engines, enables them to scan through multiple pages on the web and source the exact information that a consumer may be looking for!

How Search Engines actually work

Let’s take an example to understand this better.

If you were looking for a bakery in Mumbai, you would type ‘Bakery in Mumbai’ in the search tab.

This is referred to as a ‘Search Query’.

Now the task of the search engine is to scan through multiple web pages that are available online and put forth the best content in front of the searcher.

Of course, the goal here is to ensure that the most relevant content is shown to the person.

Now the entire process of segregating the content and ranking the webpages will be covered in other videos later, but for now, this is just the base.

Note the listings that show up will include websites, business listings, advertisements, images, maps, etc. and the ranking for each of these will differ.

Now as a marketer, it becomes important for you to rank higher on the search pages, simply because your potential customer is searching for this content.

You need to be present right on top!

But how do we get it to rank on top is a little complex process, nonetheless I will ensure to include the same in the coming blog posts.

So that's it for today's blog post, ensure that you subscribe to the blog to get notified about the next upload under this series!
